10 Economic Sociology books for students and the general public

I am proud that the Economic Sociology and Political Economy community blog and social media have become a meaningful source of knowledge and learning—across multiple formats—for students at all levels. It is equally gratifying to see the ES/PE websites’ links appear in syllabi. In this context, one of the common questions I receive from lecturers is “Which book would you include in the syllabus for undergraduate students on this or that topic?” Students also sometimes ask me whether I can name one book that clearly covers a specific area of economic sociology.
Over the years, I have found myself repeatedly recommending several excellent books written by leading scholars especially, as I see it, for undergraduate students and the general public, as part of one publisher’s series. Most of these books are not new, but I think they certainly do a great job of elaborating on and highlighting the socio-political, historical, and cultural essence of economies and economics in their various aspects. Along with the substantial arguments and instructional contents presented in these books, they are an excellent source of references in a specific research field. Here is the list of these lucid and illuminating books to dive into:

Schrank, Andrew. 2023. The Economic Sociology of Development.

Ingham, Geoffrey. 2020. Money.

Elmelech, Yuval. 2020. Wealth.

Sallaz, Jeffrey. 2013. Labor, Economy, and Society.

Knoke, David. 2012. Economic Networks.

Aspers, Patrik. 2011. Markets.

Duina, Francesco. 2011. Institutions and the Economy.

Bandelj, Nina and Elizabeth Sowers. 2010. Economy and State: A Sociological Perspective.

Carruthers, Bruce and Laura Ariovich. 2010. Money and Credit: A Sociological Approach.

Centeno, Miguel and Joseph N. Cohen. 2010. Global Capitalism: A Sociological Perspective.
