The Karl Polanyi Bibliographic Database of Scholarship and Digital Archive

The Karl Polanyi Institute of Political Economy at Concordia University has launched the Bibliographic Database of International Scholarship – a project dedicated to exploring Karl Polanyi’s preeminent intellectual legacy and current influence worldwide. This new resource acts as a hub for Polanyi-inspired research across disciplines, providing scientific monitoring of emerging Polanyian scholarship and a knowledge transfer tool for everyone interested in learning about Polanyi and his concepts. The database seeks both to understand and contribute to how Polanyi’s ideas are received, interpreted, and transformed over time, as well as how they respond and adapt to socio-political and political-economic issues.
The Bibliographic Database is an open-source catalogue of papers, research articles, essays, books, volumes, and academic blog posts. Users can search the collection through categories and subcategories and post comments on citations. References provide links to bibliographic information. In some cases, the full article is freely available. For others, access may be restricted and require login credentials through your organization’s library.
The project serves as a companion to the Karl Polanyi Digital Archive. This searchable and viewable collection includes published and unpublished material (such as notes, lectures, articles) written by Polanyi in English, Hungarian, and German, dating back to 1919, as well as Polanyi’s correspondence with intellectuals and political figures. The archival fonds correspond to three periods in the life of Karl Polanyi: time spent in Vienna and Hungary from 1886 to 1933; time spent in England from 1934 to 1946; and time spent in North America from 1947 to 1964.
The ES/PE community, of course, bears ample witness to the enduring relevance and vitality of Polanyi’s thought through the many posts and publications devoted to his legacy over the years. I applaud the Karl Polanyi Institute of Political Economy for establishing this impressive and highly valuable new resource, which both broadens access to Polanyi’s far-reaching intellectual legacy and reaffirms its enduring relevance for understanding the social, economic, and political realities. It is an inspiring initiative that invites scholars, students, activists, and curious readers alike to immerse themselves in Polanyi’s writings and to rediscover the remarkable power of his thought to illuminate the defining political and economic origins, processes, and challenges of our time.
